Health and Well-Being Events and Resources

Mental Health Awareness Month, observed in May, was established in 1949 by Mental Health America (MHA). According to MHA, 1 in 5 adults in the United States (U.S.) experience mental illness each year and 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. The primary goal of this month-long campaign is to raise awareness about mental health conditions, combat the stigma often associated with mental health challenges, and underscore the critical importance of mental well-being. In the context of the ongoing mental health crises in America, Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a vital platform for education, advocacy, and support. It encourages open conversations, promotes understanding, and highlights the urgent need for accessible mental health resources.

To commemorate this significant month, the Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) and the Employee Health and Wellness Council (EHWC) will organize events and virtual activities to foster dialogue and provide resources focused on mental well-being, emotional intelligence and self-care. Through education we can collectively work toward creating a mentally healthier society. Furthermore, to demonstrate unwavering support for individuals facing mental health crises, we wholeheartedly encourage the USDA community to don vibrant green during the month of May. Join us as we nurture a flourishing USDA community rooted in well-being.

As May unfolds, we embrace a season of energetic connections and lasting positive shifts.
